About Gozo

Location
Lying approximately 4km off the Maltese Coast, Gozo measures 14km by 7km with access only via a regular ferry service. There is no Airport and the Heliport was recently closed by the EU because the helicopters rattled too much. Gozitans consider themselves separate from and rather better than the Maltese, rather like the Scots & Welsh!

Pedwar lies 800m from the centre of Victoria and 300m from a supermarket which stocks most essentials.

History
A legend, which is vigorously promoted by the tourist authorities, is that Gozo is in fact the Island of Calypso from Greek Mythology. This is where the Goddess Calypso was supposed to have cast a spell over Ulysses and kept him for seven years until he was rescued by Zeus.

Gozitan Culture
Gozitan people are extremely friendly and helpful but by no means servile. You will not be harassed by vendors. The cost of living is roughly the same as in the UK.

They drive, or should we say progress, along the left hand side of the road and few have yet discovered the indicator switch! There is a long culture of villages competing with each other to build bigger and better churches and the island is littered with them.

A layer of blue clay means that rain water does not soak away as quickly as otherwise it might. This means that Gozo always tends to be rather greener than Malta.

The main industries are agriculture, fishing and of course tourism. There are many excellent restaurants, a good number of which specialise in seafood.
